Mae Giffin was raped, disfigured and stabbed to death at age 15 by Daniel "Bunce" Bryan Napier, aka Fred Lockhart, an itinerant in Shreveport, La., known as the "Butterfly Man" for the paper butterflies he made and sold in the downtown area. At the time of her death, Giffin planned to be married to Lee Looney, of Arkansas. Napier's arrest, incarceration and trial for Giffin's murder led to mob scenes, riots and dispersals by deputies and National Guard soldiers before he was tried, found guilty and hanged in May 1934.

Myriad newspaper articles and her official death certificate prove she died in 1934, but her weathered tombstone bears the year 1935 and a misspelled middle name. No explanation has been offered for these discrepancies.
